Four members of Doncaster Sambo & Wrestling won gold medals when the club hosted the 2026 British Combat Sambo Championships in the city.
The competition took place at Hallcross Academy Lower in Cantley on 22 August, attracting athletes from across the UK. Competitors were seeking national podium places and opportunities to represent Great Britain in international Sambo tournaments.
Doncaster's gold medallists were junior competitors Daniel, 17, and Tamsin, 15, adult member Tai and club head coach Ewan Lister. Each won their respective weight category.
“Myself and the club are immensely proud of this level of achievement for each of the students who took part in this event,” Mr Lister said.
He added that the discipline required humility, perseverance and dedication, and said the younger competitors had already established a foothold in national competition.
Club to host another event
Sambo incorporates techniques from wrestling, jiujitsu and judo. Doncaster Sambo & Wrestling says it is currently the only mixed martial arts club teaching both Sport Sambo and Combat Sambo in Doncaster and the wider area.
The club is due to host its next mixed martial arts event in Doncaster on 3 October 2026.
