Doncaster Rovers defender Jack Senior has spoken about his unlikely journey to League One football, a path that took him through unemployment, trials, and the National League before earning his place in Grant McCann's squad.

The 29-year-old full-back was released from Luton Town at 22 years old after a three-year spell, finding himself adrift without a club. "I was away from home for the first time and that taught me a lot growing up, and then after three years, I got released and was out in the wilderness, going out on trials, people not wanting to sign you, and I didn't know what the next stage of my life was going to look like," Senior said.

The wilderness years

Senior found temporary football with Gloucester City in the National League North, but remained unemployed. When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, his professional prospects dimmed further. He signed on at the job centre and received calls about night security guard work — a stark reminder of how far his career had fallen from its early trajectory.

"I was at a bit of a crossroads, especially when the pandemic started," he explained. "I haven't told many people this, but I signed on at the job centre and I was getting calls asking if I wanted to be a night security guard. It wasn't what I wanted to do."

Halifax and the comeback

A trial at FC Halifax Town proved to be the lifeline Senior needed. He signed for the National League club and returned to his hometown in the north, where he spent three years rebuilding his career. Over that period he made more than 100 appearances and earned himself promotion to the EFL.

When Grant McCann arrived at Doncaster Rovers, he offered Senior a path into League Two. The defender accepted immediately, drawn by McCann's ambition and the club's stated goals. "The project he pitched to me and where he said the club was going — so far he's been true to his word," Senior said. "I didn't want to be in League Two forever, and that was something that I had alluded to, though it wasn't something that I thought I'd maybe be capable of."

Senior's form has attracted praise in the early stages of the current League One campaign, rewarding his decade-long battle to return to the professional game.
