Doncaster Rovers have secured captain Owen Bailey on a three-year contract extension following an outstanding 2024/25 season. The 27-year-old midfielder, who has been with the club for three years, put pen to paper on the new deal this week.
Bailey played a pivotal role in Rovers' Sky Bet League Two title-winning campaign and was named in the League One Team of the Season after netting 15 goals last term. Manager Grant McCann praised the midfielder's consistency and commitment to the club.
McCann's Assessment
"He's a massive part of what we're trying to do here," McCann said. "He's a club captain, he's an inspiration to everybody, he trains every single day, he's delivered on the pitch consistently, he's not missed a game in three years."
McCann highlighted Bailey's professionalism and character. "He's everything that I like in a football player - his determination, his work-rate, his attitude, his humbleness, just everything about him. He's top and I'm delighted to secure him for another three years."
Bailey's previous contract had one year remaining with the option of a further 12 months. McCann chose to improve terms despite having two years of cover remaining. "What was important, with still having two years left on his contract, was for us to increase it," the manager explained.
McCann singled out Bailey's quality in midfield. "In my book, he was the best midfield player and best attacking midfield player in the league last season."
What Comes Next
Bailey's first match following the contract extension comes in the Carabao Cup against Stockport County, before he captains Rovers into the League One season.
