Doncaster Rovers suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Mansfield Town in their opening Sky Bet League One fixture of the 2026/27 campaign on Saturday at the One Call Stadium.
Rovers fell behind to a Rhys Oates strike in the 26th minute. The home side's early pressure paid off following a one-two down the right flank, with Lucas Akins delivering a low ball before Oates tucked the ball into the net.
Grant McCann's side emerged with attacking intent after the interval. Jack Senior equalised inside the opening five minutes of the second half, but Mansfield secured victory when Louis Reid scored 16 minutes from time in an even contest.
New faces impress on debut
Tommy Simkin made his league debut after impressing with his penalty shootout heroics in the Carabao Cup. Neill Byrne, Isaac Hutchinson and Alfie May were also handed their first starts in the third tier since joining the club this summer.
Robbie Gotts returned to the teamsheet after recovering from a thigh issue.
How the match unfolded
Rovers proved a threat on the counter-attack throughout the opening period. Isaac Hutchinson created and took several shooting chances, with efforts from both him and May testing Mansfield's goalkeeper Liam Roberts. Hutchinson was particularly active, receiving opportunities from Jack Senior's footwork and a goalkeeper's goal-kick that fell kindly to him near the box.
Despite Rovers' attacking play, they were unable to find an equaliser before half-time, as Mansfield held their one-goal advantage into the break.
