Doncaster Rovers secured a 1-0 victory over Liverpool U21 in the Jersey Mike's Trophy, with the match notable for Dylan Hartley becoming the club's youngest ever player.

Grant McCann made six changes to the starting line-up for the fixture, while Hartley joined youngsters Ethan Hodgett and Ashton Swales among the substitutes.

First Half Action

Rovers made an aggressive start, with Tommi O'Reilly delivering a curling corner in the opening minute that found Brandon Hanlan's head, but his effort went just wide. Liverpool responded with their own set-piece pressure before Joshua Sonni-Lambie's deflected shot posed little threat to Josh Clarke.

Jordan Thomas proved a constant threat down the wing, and his trickery nearly resulted in a goal as he shifted the ball onto his right foot. Robbie Gotts tested Liverpool's goalkeeper with a long-range strike from Isaac Hutchinson's assist, while Neill Byrne's diving header from another Hutchinson corner dribbled across the face of goal.

Tom Nixon and James Husband both created opportunities as Rovers maintained their dominance in Liverpool's half. The visitors rattled the woodwork when Will Wright latched onto a loose ball and attempted to chip Clarke from distance, but the bar kept the score level.

Rovers' persistence paid off with seconds remaining in the first half. Husband nutmegged a Liverpool defender and squared the ball into the box, and although Owen Bailey's close-range shot was saved, O'Reilly converted the rebound to put Rovers 1-0 ahead at the break.

Second Half Changes

McCann made a double substitution at half-time, with Husband and O'Reilly replaced by Jay McGrath and Hakeeb Adelakun. The second half began with end-to-end play as Clarke was called into action to deal with shots from Wright.
