Tommy Simkin has backed himself to have a strong season after saving two penalties in Doncaster Rovers' shootout victory over Stockport County on Saturday in the Carabao Cup first round.
The 21-year-old goalkeeper joined Rovers this summer and made an immediate impression in his competitive debut at Edgeley Park. Alfie May gave Rovers the lead shortly after half time, but Stockport levelled within a minute, forcing the tie to a penalty shootout.
Simkin's saves proved decisive, and after Hakeeb Adelakun converted his spot kick, Rovers progressed to the second round.
Settling In at Doncaster
Speaking after the match, Simkin credited his preparation during pre-season for his confidence in the shootout. "Making saves is just what I need to do to help the lads out. I've had a good pre-season and I felt really confident coming into the season," he said.
The goalkeeper also praised his defensive teammates for their efforts against Stockport's threat, particularly Harry Wood. He also thanked goalkeeping coach Kyle Letheren and the club's analysts for their preparation work ahead of the match.
Simkin has previous shootout experience from his time at Walsall a couple of seasons ago, when his side also won. "I haven't really experienced it much, but it's enjoyable putting the pressure back on whoever is taking the penalty," he said.
What's Next
Simkin will hope to make his League One debut next weekend when Rovers travel to Mansfield Town. The second round draw for the Carabao Cup will take place on Monday evening.
Rovers' next home fixture is the South Yorkshire derby against Barnsley on Saturday 22 August, with a 12.30pm kick-off at One Call Stadium. That match is sold out.
