Doncaster Rovers U16s recorded an outstanding 3-2 away victory against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night in an all-South Yorkshire fixture.
Rovers dominated the opening stages, racing into a three-goal lead inside 22 minutes. Myles Walshaw opened the scoring on 10 minutes after racing away from the Wednesday defence on the right and slotting across goal one-on-one. Walshaw then turned provider on 14 minutes, showing neat feet in the area to round the Wednesday goalkeeper before sliding the ball across to Dylan Hartley, who confidently passed it into the net.
The pick of Rovers' goals came on 22 minutes when Tommy Barnett played a pinpoint pass across the field to Hartley on the left. The forward plucked the ball out of the air before arrowing into the net from the edge of the area.
Second-Half Fightback
Sheffield Wednesday pulled a goal back at close-range on the half-hour mark following a positive move down the right, but Rovers held a 3-1 advantage at half-time.
The Owls grew into the second half and grabbed their second goal on 69 minutes with a tidy side-footed finish from just inside the area. They pressed for an equaliser two minutes later when their creative midfielder whistled a volley past the near post from outside the box.
Rovers defended excellently in the closing stages to secure the hard-fought victory, with Wednesday's final chance sailing waywardly over from the edge of the area.
